"DUSTON, a parish in the hundred of Nobottle Grove, in the county of Northampton, 2 miles N.W. of Northampton, its post town and nearest railway. It is situated on a branch of the river Nen. An abbey for Black Canons was founded here in the beginning of the 12th century by William Peverel, natural son of the Conqueror, the revenue of which, at the Dissolution, amounted to £175 8s. 2d. A few remains are still to be seen in a secluded spot. The village is pleasantly situated on the slope of a hill. There are several quarries of valuable building stone. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Peterborough, value £159, in the patronage of Viscount Palmerston, who is lord of the manor. The church, dedicated to St. Luke, is a handsome stone structure, with tower containing three bells. The charities amount to £30 per annum. The Baptists and Independents have each a chapel."
