"ASHBY-WITH-OBY, and THURNE, at the north-western angle of West-Flegg hundred, were consolidated as one parish in 1604, and now comprise 220 inhabitants, 1967 acres of land, a number of scattered houses, and the small village of THURNE, or Thirne, on a declivity near the confluence of the rivers Thurne and Bure, 11 miles N.W. of Yarmouth. The Church, dedicated to St. Edmund, stands near this village, and is a rectory valued in the King’s Books at £10. The Bishop of Norwich is the patron, and the Rev. Horatio Bolton, M.A. the incumbent." [William White, History, Gazetteer, and Directory of Norfolk (1836) - Transcription copyright © Brian Randell]
