"CAISTER–next-Yarmouth is a large and widely scattered parish, in the incorporated hundred of East and West Flegg, county court district of Great Yarmouth, rural deanery of Flegg, archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich, East Norfolk, about 2½ miles north from Yarmouth. The church of the Holy Trinity is an old building, with nave, chancel, south aisle, and lofty square tower containing 1 bell. The register dates from about 1563. Anciently there were two parishes, but of St.Edmund church only part of the tower remains. The living is a rectory, annual value, according to commutation, £942 8s. 11¼ d., in the patronage of, and held by, the Rev. George William Steward of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Caister is supposed to be more ancient than Great Yarmouth, and takes its name from a Roman station, the foundations of which have been nearly obliterated by the plough." This is the Caister near Great Yarmouth. There is also Caistor St Edmund (or Caistor next Norwich). The spellings are different, but it is quite common for them to be used interchangeably.

For the civil registration of births, marriages and deaths between 1837 and 1923 (and for the censuses from 1851 to 1901), Caister on Sea was in Flegg Registration District. Between 1837 and 1850, the district was called East and West Flegg.
