Introduction
Ashburton Roman Catholic Cemetery began to be used for burials in 1884. The majority of inscriptions recorded refer to burials post 1930, the latest date being 1994. As some inscriptions refer to deaths before 1884, it is assumed these burials have taken place elsewhere.
The Cemetery has suffered some damage and some of the stones have fallen forward. Some inscriptions were difficult to read or illegible. A question mark (?) follows a word or date that was unclear, and where parts of the inscription were illegible, this is indicated by dots ....
Some inscriptions were to be found on vases and flower containers. As these are easily moved, it cannot be assumed that they occupy their original places in the graveyard. It must be borne in mind that any container found within a plot may not have any connection with that particular grave.
Although these inscriptions were recorded as accurately as possible, mistakes and omissions cannot be ruled out. In any case, it is advisable to check names and dates in the burial register.
