“WEST ASHBY, a parish in the sake of Horncastle, parts of Lincoln, in the county of Lincoln, 2 miles to the N.E. of Horncastle, its post town. It contains the hamlets of Farthorpe and Middlethorpe. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Lincoln, value £54, in the patronage of the Bishop of Carlisle. The church is dedicated to All Saints. Ashby Thorpe House is the principal residence.

West Ashby is both a village and a parish in the Wold hills, two miles north of Horncastle. Fulletby parish lies to the east and Horncastle parish to the south. The parish covers about 2,380 acres and includes the hamlets of Farthorpe and Middlethorpe.
West Ashby village is a short walk from Horncastle. If you are planning a visit:

- This place was an ancient Chapelry in Lincoln county and it became a modern Civil Parish shortly after all the other Civil Parishes were established.
- The parish was in the ancient Horncastle Soke in the East Lindsey district and parts of Lindsey.
- Some early 1900s Directories list the parish as part of the South Lindsey division of Lincolnshire.
- In December, 1880, this parish was reduced in size to create the Wildmore Civil Parish.

- Bastardy cases would be heard in the Horncastle petty session hearings.
- In 1707, Richard FREEMAN left an annuity of 10 shillings for the use of the poor.
- In 1763, Horton BARKER left an annuity of 10 shillings for the use of the poor.
- As a result of the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act, the parish became part of the Horncastle Poor Law Union.
- In 1848, Mrs. BARKER left the interest off of £300 to purchase coals for the poor.
