“SUTTON-IN-THE-MARSH, a parish in the Marsh division of Calceworth hundred, parts of Lindsey, county Lincoln, 6 miles N.E. of Alford, its post town, and 18 S.E. of Louth. The village is near the coast. There are brick and tile kilns. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lincoln, value £68. The church, dedicated to St. Clement, has been entirely renovated, and the chancel rebuilt in 1860. The original church, with a considerable portion of the parish, was submerged by the sea several centuries back. The parochial charities produce about £1 per annum. The Wesleyans have a chapel. F. Cooke, Esq., of Boston, is lord of the manor."

- The Anglican parish church is dedicated to Saint Clement.
- Some centuries ago, a large part of the parish, including its church, was washed away by the sea. For many years the ruins of the parish church could be seen at very low water.
- The church was rebuilt in 1819 and again in 1860.
- The church seats 200.

This village and parish lie on the shore of the North Sea, 7 miles northeast of Alford and 18 miles south-east of Louth. The parish covers about 1,800 acres. The southern part of the village is known as Sandilands.
If you are planning a visit:
- By automobile, take the A1111 trunk road northeast out of Alford via Bilsby to get to Sutton on Sea.
- Passenger rail service ended in October 1970.

- Sea flooding was a periodic problem in the Middle Ages. The village was last flooded on 31 January 1953, when a ten-foot storm surge broke through the flood defences.

- The "Preferred" name in the 1800s was "Sutton in the Marsh", but "Sutton le Marsh" was an accepted alternative.

- In some records, you may find the parish listed as "Sutton West Alford".
- This place was an ancient parish of Lincolnshire and became a modern Civil Parish.
- The parish covered 2,096 acres in 1881, but was reduced by almost 300 acres to 1,807 acres by 1891.
- The parish was in the ancient Calceworth Wapentake in the East Lindsey district in the parts of Lindsey.

- Bastardy cases would be heard in the Alford petty session hearings every other week.
- In 1741, George SCOTTRETH left a bequest of 46 shillings per year for the poor.

- A National School was built in 1862. Each child paid a penny per week to attend.
- The school became a board school in 1887, and a council school in 1903. It became a primary school in 1964, and has been called the Sutton on Sea Community Primary School since 1999.
