Description in 1871:
"TWYFORD, a parish, with a village and a chapelry, in Melton-Mowbray district, Leicester; 6 miles SSW of Melton-Mowbray r. station. Post town, Melton-Mowbray-Acres, 2,420. Real property, £4,539 Pop., 543. Houses, 114. The property is much subdivided. The living is a vicarage, annexed to Hungerton. The church was restored in 1849. There are a Wesleyan chapel, a national school, and charities £34."

- The parish was in the Melton Mowbray sub-district of the Melton Mowbray Registration District.
- The 1851 Census for Leicestershire has been indexed by the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society. The whole index is available on microfiche. The society has also published it in print.

Twyford is a village, a township and a parish which lie about 12 miles north-east of Leicester city and 6 miles south of Melton Mobray. The parish covers just over 1,200 acres, most of which was pasture for sheep and cattle.

- The parish derived its name from two fords over a small river which runs through the village.
- The parish is in the ancient Framland Hundred in the eastern division of the county.
- In April, 1936, the parish of Twyford was abolished and reformed to create Twyford and Thorpe Civil Parish with 1,205 acres.
