Description in 1871:
"PACKINGTON, a village and a parish in the district of Ashby-de-la-Zouch; the parish chiefly in Leicestershire, but partly in Derbyshire. The village stands ¾ of a mile E of the boundary with Derbyshire, and 1¼ S of Ashby-de-la-Zouch r. station; and has a post-office under Ashby-de-la-Zouch. The parish contains also the hamlet of Snibston, and part of the chapelry of Coalville; and comprises 2,020 acres in Leicestershire, and 340 in Derbyshire. Real property, £24,488; of which £18,502 are in mines. Pop. in 1851, 1,294; in 1861, 1,190. Houses, 242. The decrease of pop. was caused by migration ofcolliers. Pop. of the Derbyshire portion, 252. Houses, 57. The manor belongs to Lady Edith Hastings. The land and collieries of Snibston belong to a colliery company. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Peterborough. Value, £330.* Patron, Lady Edith Hastings. The church is early English; has, at different times, been partly rebuilt; and consists of nave, aisles, and chancel, with a tower. A very old chapel is in Snibston; and there are chapels for Baptists and Wesleyans, a free school, and charities £59."

- The Anglican parish church for Packington is dedicated to the Holy Rood.
- The church building apparently dates from at least 1220.
- This chancel was restored in 1908.

Oliver MILLS has a photograph of the Packington Lockup on Geo-graph, taken in August, 2016. There are no reported records for this facility and most prisoners would be held for very short periods in such a lock-up.
Packington is a village and a parish 17 miles northwest of Leicester and 1.5 miles south of Ashby-de-la-Zouch. The parish covers 1,909 acres, but had covered 2.396 acres in 1891.
The village is in a fertile valley on a stream that feeds into the Soar River. If you are planning a visit:
- By automobile, pick up the A512 just east of Ashby-de-la-Zouch and head toward Loughborough. After you cross the A447, Packington is just off to the left.

There is an oak plaque with white lettering in the parish church that is the Roll of Honour for those who served in World War I.
- Packington was not established as a Civil Parish until 1866.
- The parish was in the ancient West Goscote Hundred in the southern division of the county.
- The parish was mostly in Leicestershire and partly in Derbyshire.
- In March, 1884, this parish was reduced in size to enlarge Ravenstone parish with the hamlet of Snibstone.
- In April, 1936, this parish was reduced by 487 acres to enlarge Ashby de la Zouch.
