It was founded in 1926. The church opened with Christmas Midnight Mass in 1938.
Many people will remember Fr. John Foster and Fr. Roger Wearden as Chaplains to Maine Road, as their small homely chapel was on the doorstep of the football ground. Some of their parishioners, like Jimmy McMullen and Matthew Busby, were lights of the Maine Road team. St. Kentigern's dates from 1926, and in its first years did not seem to know where the best site would be for a church. The present site and building were acquired by Fr. Mortimer Daly, who was appointed here in 1937. He had the good fortune to get the church opened before the war put a stop to building.Fr. Denis O'Brien came in 1941, and worked to reduce the debt until his departure for Our Lady of Grace, Prestwich.
Taken from "Salford Diocese and its Catholic past", a survey by Charles A. Bolton, a Priest of the above Diocese. Published 1950 on the First Centenary for the Diocese of Salford.
This site provides historical information about churches, other places of worship and cemeteries. It has no connection with the churches themselves. For current information you should contact them directly.
Whilst every effort has been made to record exact details of record office and library holdings
you are recommended to check with them before visiting to ensure that they do hold the records and years you
