"SPEKE, a township in the parish of Childwall, hundred of West Derby, county Lancaster, 6 miles S.W. of Prescot. It has stations on the Manchester, Sheffield, and Lincolnshire, and London and North-Western railways. It is situated on the river Mersey. The village is considerable."
