There was a chapel of ease on this site in 1250. It was consecrated to the glory of God in honour of the Virgin Mary on 1 October 1544 by the Bishop of Chester John Bird.
The tower was restored in 1653 and 1712. On the western face can be seen "God's Eye". The bell is dated 1830. On the south-west corner of the nave is a sundial dated 1718. The old priest's door can still be seen on the south-face..
The gallery was installed in 1815. The church was restored in 1854 and again in 1902. Fence became a separate parish in 1837 and Sabden in 1841. The desk in the vestry is dated 1853.
