Market Place Methodist New Connexion, Mossley

There was a graveyard but this was closed, the remains moved and houses are now built on the site. The memorial inscriptions are held at Tameside local studies. The graves at the side of the church were never moved the flats were built around them, whilst building the latest extension to the church a grave was discovered and this was the only one to be replaced on the same site.

It was founded in 1797 in Craddock St. This church was replaced by a new one on Chapel St in 1834. The present Church was built in 1964.

The Methodist New Connexion was formed in 1797 when it seceeded from the Wesleyan Methodists. In 1907 the Methodist New Connexion merged with the United Methodist Free Church and the Bible Christians to form the United Methodist Church.

In 1932 the United Methodists joined with the Wesleyan Methodists and the Primitive Methodists to form the Methodist Church of Great Britain.

The baptisms are on microfilm at Tameside local studies from 1792-1837. The baptism registers for 1837 - 1947 are held at Manchester Central Library.
