St Stephen, Kearsley Moor, Church of England

The church has/had a graveyard. Amongst those buried in the graveyard are victims of the local Unity Brook Colliery disaster in 1878 which killed 43 miners.

It was founded in 1870. The church was erected in 1870-71 by the family of the late Harrison Blair,esq of Kearsley House, Chemical Manufacturer at a cost of 3,600. It has seating for 538 parishioners.

Prior to the erection of the church, the local parishioners used St Saviour's, Ringley for baptisms and burials. From the 1820s they had used St John's at Farnworth with Kearsley for marriages and prior to that St Mary's, the parish church of Deane.

Whilst every effort has been made to record exact details of record office and library holdings you are recommended to check with them before visiting to ensure that they do hold the records and years you wish to examine. Similarly check with transcript publishers to ensure they cover the records and years you require before making a purchase.

The registers date from 1871 and are held at the church. However, located at the Lancashire Record Office in Preston are the admission registers of the primary school associated with the church, Kearsley Moor Primary School. These date from 1871 to 1929. These give dates of birth of pupils and names and addresses of their parents.
