St James, Heywood, Church of England

It was founded in 1838.

St. James's Church was consecrated in 1838 and is situated at the east end of Tower Street at its highest point and at the eastern extremity of the parish. The original parish was large and sprawling and stretched to the western boundary of the old borough. It was subsequently diminished by the erection of new churches dedicated to St. George (Heap Bridge) and St. Margaret (Darnhill). The parish was also previously served by a Mission Church dedicated to St. Anne (at Wham Bar) and ran three Sunday Schools located in Tower Street (opposite the church), Bury Street and Heady Hill. The Heady Hill building also operated as a day school. At the time of the centenary in 1938, the church had three clergy. The vicar, Rev.A.Trevor Wright D.D. was assisted by Rev.J.Smith and Rev.G.C.V.Knowlson.
