The building was built in the early twentith century as an Upper Grade School but used for many years as the offices and joinery workshops of local builders. It was purchased in 1983 by the Sephardi (Spanish and Portuguese) Congregation as a replacement for their former synagogue in Cheetham Hill Road - now the Museum of Jewish History, opened in 1984.
