It was founded before 1895. It is now closed and has been demolished, but we do not know the date of closure. Founded in 1833 by members of the Claremont Baptist Church who wanted to form a new cause in the town. Originally in the Assembly Room of the Co-Operative Hall, Bow Street– First services held March 30th of that year, and the Church officially founded on June 10th. Commenced building of a School/Chapel built 1885 in St John Street, on the corner of Thwaites Street (off Higher Bridge Street) and opened on 30th March 1886. At a cost of £910.
The first Minister, Revd. F. E. Robinson B.A. inducted on August 14 1887 Alterations/Extension to Chapel and New Schoolrooms opened in 1908 at a cost of approx. £2,100, with an additional £200 for an organ.
In the early 1970’s due to the area being redeveloped the Church was the subject of a Compulsory Purchase Order and was demolished. The Church moved onto “temporary” premises (a pre-fabricated structure) in Slater Street, and remained there until they amalgamated with the Central Baptist Church, Snowden Street in 1997
