It was founded in 1879 and closed in 1987. From 17 Nov 1966 the parish was united with that of St James as the parish of All Souls with St James. It is now in the care of the Churches Conservation trust.

The church was built 1880-81 by Paley & Austin, following a bequest from Nathaniel Greenhalgh (d. 1877) and carried through by his brother Thomas. It was consecrated on 30th June 1881. It is aisle-less, making it unusually wide (without supporting columns) and its interior fittings are complete and believed also to be by Paley & Austin.
