“RUSHDEN, a parish in the hundred of Odsey, county Hertford, 4½ miles N.W. of Buntingford, its post town, and 5 S.E. of Baldock. The village, which is of small extent, is chiefly agricultural. Three parts of the land are arable, and the remainder meadow and pasture, with 127 acres of woodland. The impropriate tithes belong to the Dean and Chapter of Lincoln. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Rochester, value £141, in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Lincoln. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is an ancient structure, with a square tower, containing five bells. It contains a monument to Sir Adolph Meetkerke, removed in 1754 from the church of St. Botolph, Aldersgate. The register dates from 1560. A. Meetkerke, Esq., is lord of the manor and principal landowner."
