"About two miles north from Hitchin, in the same hundred as that town (Hitchin and Pirton), is Ickleford, a small village in the parish of its name, the etymology of which is traced from the Ickling or Ichneild street, one of the Roman roads. The church is dedicated to St. Catherine; the principal entrance is by a fine arch, in the Norman style of architecture: the living is a rectory, in the patronage of the Peers family; the present incumbent is the Rev. T. W. Thirlwall. Some degree of interest is attached to this church on account of its being the burial-place of Henry Boswell, king of the gypsies, who died in 1760, at the advanced age of 90; the remains of his wife and grand-daughter are likewise interred here. "ICKLEFORD, a parish in the hundred of Hitchin, county Herts, 2 miles N.E. of Hitchin, its post town and railway station. The village, which is small, is situated near the ancient Icknield Street, at the ford of the Ivel, under the Wilbury hills. The women are employed in the manufacture of the straw-plait. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Rochester, value £280. The church, dedicated to St. Catherine, has a square tower containing five bells. It has been thoroughly repaired at the expense of the Hon. Mrs. Ryder, and contains a tomb to Boswell, the gipsy king. The register dates from 1749. The Wesleyans have a chapel. Here is a National school, founded and supported by the Hon. Mrs. Ryder. Ickleford House is the seat of T. Cockayne, Esq."
