“EAST BARNET, a parish and small village in the hundred of Cashio, in the county of Hertford, 2 miles to the S.E. of Chipping Barnet, and 10 from London. The Great Northern railway passes close to the village. It formerly belonged to the abbey of St. Alban's, and the abbots occasionally resided in a house at Monk's Frith Garden a hill near the church. The village is beautifully situated in a pleasant country, about one mile east of the high road to St. Alban's, and the houses are well built. It is bounded on the S. by Southgate, and on the E. by Enfield Chase, which extends from Enfield in Middlesex. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Rochester, of the value, with the curacy of Chipping Barnet, of £1,042, in the gift of the crown. The church, which is very ancient, is dedicated to St. Mary. There is also a chapel of ease recently erected at Arkley, and a National school for girls. There are mineral springs in the vicinity of the village, which, although so near the metropolis, is remarkably quiet and retired, there being no traffic through, or conveyance from, it. Oak Hill is a fine mansion, situated on an eminence.

"ARKLEY, a chapelry in the parish of East Barnet, in the hundred of Cashio, in the county of Hertford. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Rochester."
