“CLOTHALL, a parish in the hundred of Odsey, in the county of Herts, 2 miles S.E. of Baldock, its post town, and 11 S. W. of Royston. At the former place is a station on the Great Northern railway. Several tributaries to the river Beane take their rise in this parish. It is situated to the E. of the Roman way and to the S. of Icknield Street. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Rochester, value £661, in the patronage of the Marquis of Salisbury. The church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is an ancient stone structure, with tower. It has a chapel, monuments and brasses, .Some as early as 1404. There are National schools."
