Gazetteers

The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

"BROXBOURNE, a parish in the hundred and county of Hertford, 6 miles to the S.W. of Hertford, and 16 miles to the N. of London. Hoddesdon is its post town. It is a station on the Great Eastern railway. The parish is situated in a pleasant country on the border of Essex, on the W. side of the river Lea, and formerly included the hamlet of Hoddesdon, erected into a distinct parish in 1863. The manor formerly belonged to the knights of St. John. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Rochester, of the value of £361, in the patronage of the Bishop of Rochester. The church, dedicated to St. Augustine, was restored in 1857. It is a spacious structure, partly of flint, in the perpendicular style of architecture, with a tower, spire, and a side chapel. It contains an ancient font with pillars, several brasses (one of the date 1473), and some fine old monuments to families who held the manor. In the town is a free school, founded in 1667 by Sir Richard Lucy, and endowed with £20 a year. An almshouse for 6 widows was founded and endowed by the Hon. Letitia Monson, in 1727, the revenue of which is £165 per annum. There are several other charities producing about £70 a year. Broxbourne Bury, the old manor-house, was honoured by a visit of James I. on his way from Scotland."

"RYE HOUSE, a hamlet in the parish of Broxbourne, county Herts, 2 miles N.E. of Hoddesden, and 3 E. of Hertford. It is a station on the Cambridge section of the Great Eastern railway. It has remains of the ancient seat of the Orgards, built in the reign of Henry VI., and now used as a workhouse. It was here that the pretended plot of 1683 was said to have been formed by Lord William Russell and Algernon Sidney for killing the king, and for which they were both executed."
