“BAYFORD, a parish in the hundred and county of Hertford, 3 miles to the S. of Hertford. It is an ancient place, and is referred to as belonging to the Danish earl Tosti before the Norman Conquest. The living is a perpetual curacy annexed to the rectory of Essendon, in the diocese of Rochester. The church, a modern building, is dedicated to St. Mary. It contains an old octagonal font, and several monuments of the families of Knighton, Fanshaw, and Baker, who successively owned the manor of Bayford. On an eminence near the village is Bayfordbury, the seat of the Bakers. The mansion contains the famous Kit-Cat Club portraits collected by Jacob Tonson, and placed in his residence at Barn Elms. Among them are nearly fifty by Kneller, of eminent statesmen, authors, wits, &c."
