ULLINGSWICK is a parish and small village 6 miles south-south-by-west from Bromyard (its post town), 5 east from Dinmore railway station, and 9 north-east-by-north from Hereford, in Broxash hundred, Bromyard union and county court district, North Frome deanery, and Hereford archdeaconry and bishopric; it is situated in a delightfully pleasant vale, about 1 mile and a half north-west from the turnpike road leading from Bromyard to Hereford. The church, supposed to have been dedicated in honor of St. Helen (recently restored), is an old stone building, with cupola and 2 bells; the interior consists of nave, chancel, south porch, font, and a painted chancel window to the memory of the late rector's wife. The register dates from 1562. The living is a rectory, commuted at £200 yearly, with residence and 25 acres of glebe land, with the chapelry of Little Cowarne annexed, commuted at £135, with 28 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Worcester; the Rev. John Middleton Ware LL.B. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge is the rector. There is a school in the parish, supported by voluntary subscriptions, for the education of poor children of both sexes in this and the adjoining parishes of Little Cowarne and Felton. The population in 1861 was 318; the acreage is 1,245. The soil is stiff clay. John Parker Esq., James Parker, Esq., and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, are the chief landowners. The chief crops are wheat, beans, peas, hops and apples.LOWDY HALL, Wildon, Derndale, The Linnett, Little Hope, Lower Court, The Pulling, Pool House, Upperton, and Upper Court are places here.
