[Description(s) from The National Gazetteer (1868)]
"HORFIELD, a parish in the lower division of the hundred of Berkeley, county Gloucester, 2 miles N.E. of Bristol, its post town. It is a small agricultural village situated on the Great Northern road. There are some mineral springs in the neighbourhood, and stone-quarries, also a barrack for infantry. The land is chiefly pasture, with some arable and common. The living is a perpetual curacy* in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, value £1.86, formerly held by Bishop Seyer. The church, which has been rebuilt, is a small edifice, with a tower containing five bells. There is a village school."
