[Description(s) from The National Gazetteer (1868)]
"FRENCHAY, a tything in the parish of Winterbourne, upper division of the hundred of Langley, county Gloucester, 4 miles N.E. of Bristol, its post town, and 6 S.W. of Chipping-Sodbury. It is situated on a tributary of the river Avon, and is a separate ecclesiastical district, including the tything of Hambrook and some portion of Winterbourne Down. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, value £500, in the patronage of St. John's College, Oxford. The church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Frenchay House is the principal residence."
