"WIVENHOE, a parish in the Colchester division of the hundred of LEXDEN, county of ESSEX, 4 miles (S. E. by E.) from Colchester, containing 1287 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry of Colchester, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £10, endowed with £200 private benefaction, and £200 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Executors of the Rev. N. Corsellis. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. There is a place of worship for Independents. The parish is bounded on the west and south by the river Colne. Wivenhoe is considered the port to Colchester, and has a regular custom-house establishment, with a commodious quay, whence the noted Colchester oysters are shipped for the London and other markets.
