"THURROCK (WEST), a parish in the hundred of GRAFFORD, county of ESSEX, 1 mile (W.) from Grays-Thurrock, containing, with the township of Purfleet, 839 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the jurisdiction of the Commissary of Essex and Herts, concurrently with the Consistorial Court of the Bishop of London, rated in the king's books at £15. 13. 4., and in the patronage of S. Whitbread, Esq. The church is dedicated to St. Clement. The parish is bounded on the south by the Thames, where there is a landing place, opposite to Greenhithe." "PURFLEET, a township in the parish of WEST-THURROCK, hundred of CHAFFORD, county of ESSEX, 16½ miles (E. by S.) from London. The population is returned with the parish. It is situated at; the mouth of a rivulet, which empties itself into the Thames. The village is chiefly inhabited by people employed in the extensive lime-works and chalk-pits. The walks among the vast caverns which have been excavated in the neighbourhood are romantic, and the views from the elevations remarkably fine.
