“COLNE (WAKES), a parish in the Witham division
of the hundred of LEXDEN, county of ESSEX, 5 ½
miles (E. by S.) from Halstead, containing 417 inhabitants.
The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of
Colchester, and diocese of London, rated in the king's
books at £12. 0. 5., and in the patronage of the Earl
of Verulam. The church is dedicated to All Saints. The
Roman road from Colchester passes through this
parish, to the southward of which flows the river
Colne.”
