"WAKERING (LITTLE), a parish in the hundred of ROCHFORD, county of ESSEX, 4½ miles (N. E. by E.) from Southend, containing 262 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Essex, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £12, and in the patronage of the Governors of St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. Potten island, in this parish, is formed by Broomhill river and Wakering haven." "WALLASEA (ISLE-OF), an island, partly in the parishes of CANEWDON, EASTWOOD, PAGLESHAM, GREAT-STAMBRIDGE, and LITTLE-WAKERING, hundred of ROCHFORD, county of ESSEX, 6 miles (E. N. E.) from Rochford. It is now a peninsula, formed by the rivers Crouch and Broomhill, and joined to the main land by a causeway, kept up at the expense of the several parishes to which it belongs."
