"LEE CHAPEL, East Lee, or Ley, signifying the east pasture, is an extra-parochial district and liberty, about 1½ miles south of Laindon church, and sometimes returned with East Tilbury or Grays Thurrock. It was formerly a distinct manor, and is a chapelry, containing 484 acres and 8 inhabitants. Crawshaw Badey, Esq., is impropriator of the tithes. The chapel, which was anciently a chantry, is now demolished. [From the Post Office Directory of Essex, Herts, Kent ... , 1855]
