"STANFORD-le-HOPE, a parish in the hundred of BARSTABLE, county of ESSEX, l½ mile (S. E. by E.) from Horndon on the Hill, containing 301 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Essex, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £12. 19. 9½., and in the patronage of Sir H. Fetherstonhaugh, Bart. The church is dedicated to St. Margaret. The parish is bounded on the south by a portion of the Thames, called the Hope."
