"SPRINGFIELD, a parish in the hundred of CHELMSFORD, county of ESSEX, 1 mile (N. E.) from Chelmsford, containing 1450 inhabitants. The living is a rectory in two portions, called Bosworth's and Richard's, but consolidated by Bishop Sherlock, in the archdeaconry of Essex, and diocese of London, the former rated in the king's books at £11. 6. 8., and the latter at £11. 4. 9½., and in the patronage of the Earl of Arran. The church is dedicated to All Saints. The river Chelmer runs through the parish, which derives its name from an extraordinary number of springs within its limits. Dr. Goldsmith composed his "Deserted Village" whilst residing at a farm-house nearly opposite the church here. Joseph Strutt, the engraver and antiquary, was born here in 1749; he died in 1802."
