“BURES (MOUNT), a parish in the Colchester division of the hundred of LEXDEN, county of ESSEX, 6 miles (E. by N.) from Halstead, containing 260 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Colchester, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £13. 6. 8., and in the patronage of the Rev. John Brett. The church is dedicated to St. John. The river Stour is -navigable on the north-eastern side of this parish, which probably takes it's distinguishing name from an artificial mount, about eighty feet in perpendicular height, covering nearly an acre and a half of ground; concerning its origin both history and tradition are silent.” [From Samuel Lewis A Topographical Dictionary of England (1831) - copyright Mel Lockie 2016]
