"MARGARETTING, a parish in the hundred of
CHELMSFORD, county of ESSEX, 1 mile (N. E. by E.)
from Ingatestone, containing 479 inhabitants. The
living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of
Essex, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books
at £9. 2. C. Phillips, Esq. and others were patrons
in 1827. The church, dedicated to St. Margaret, has
a wooden belfry surmounted by a spire. The Rev.
C. F. Bond, in 1827, left £100 Bank stock towards
the support of a Sunday school, which is attended by
about fifty children. A house, called Killigrew's farm,
is said to have been the frequent resort of Henry
VIII.: it seems to have been a place of great security,
being surrounded by a moat, which, within memory,
was crossed by a draw-bridge, having two watch
towers." [From Samuel Lewis A Topographical Dictionary of England (1831) - copyright Mel Lockie 2016]
