"KELVEDON, a parish in the hundred of WITHAM, county of ESSEX, 12¾ miles (N. E.) from Chelmsford, containing 1328 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Colchester, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £9 4. 2., and in the patronage of the Bishop of London. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. The Independents have a place of worship here. The village, situated on the line of the main road through Essex, is neat and well built, and contains several highly respectable dwelling-houses: the Blackwater river runs on the eastern and southern sides of it.
