Great Horkesley is a parish 6 miles east of Bures station, 4 miles north of Colchester, in Lexden union and hundred. The parish contains 3,084 acres. Population in 1861 was 760" [Kelly's Directory of Essex, 1862]
"HORKSLEY (GREAT), a parish in the Colchester division of the hundred of LEXDEN, county of ESSEX, 1¾ mile (S. S. W.) from Nayland, containing 623 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Colchester, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £15. The Countess de Grey was patroness in 1817. The church is dedicated to All Saints.
