“BRAXTED (GREAT), a parish in the hundred of
WITHAM, county of ESSEX, 2 miles (E. by N.) from
Witham, containing 508 inhabitants. The living is a
rectory, in the archdeaconry of Colchester, and diocese
of London, rated in the king's books at £19, and
in the patronage of the Master and Fellows of Corpus
Christi College, Cambridge. The church, dedicated to
All Saints, has some Norman remains. There is a place of
worship for Independents. A priory of Black canons,
in honour' of St. Nicholas, was founded at Tiptree,
in this parish, in the time of Edward I., which, at
the time of its dissolution, had a revenue of £22. 6.4.”
