“BENTLEY (GREAT), a parish in the hundred of TENDRING, county of ESSEX, 8 miles (E. S. E.) from Colchester, containing 794 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Colchester, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £7, endowed with £400 private benefaction, and £400 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Bishop of London. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists.
