“CHIGNAL (ST-JAMES), a parish in the hundred
of CHELMSFORD, county of ESSEX, 3 ½ miles (N. W.)
from Chelmsford, containing 217 inhabitants. The living
is a rectory, with that of Mashbury united, in the
archdeaconry of Essex, and diocese of London, rated in
the king's books at £10. 14. 7., and in the patronage of
John Strutt, Esq. Besides the present church of St.
James, there was formerly one dedicated to St. Mary,
long since taken down.”
