"Ardleigh is mentioned in 'Domesday Survey' and is a parish and railway station on the Eastern Union railway, in the Tendring hundred and union, 4½ miles north from Colchester, 3½ miles southeast from Manningtree, 26 miles northeast from Chelmsford, 12½ miles southwest from Ipswich, 16 miles from Harwich steam boat station, 30 miles from Bury, and 55½ miles from London, on the road to Manningtree. The parish contains 4,905 acres. Population in 1861 was 1,580." [Kelly's Directory of Essex, 1862]
