Abbess Roding or Abbess Roothing, 27 miles from London, in Onger hundred and union. Rochester diocese, Essex Archdeaconry, Onger deanery, takes its name from the cicrumstances of having of old belonged to the Abbess of Barking. Population in 1861 was 220, Acres 1,602

"ROOTHING (ABBOT'S [sic]), a parish partly in the hundred of DUNMOW, but chiefly in that of ONGAR, county of ESSEX, 5¾ miles (N. by E.) from Chipping-Ongar, containing, with the hamlet of Barwick, 236 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Middlesex, and diocese of London, rated in the king's books at £14. 10., and in the patronage of the Rev. Thomas Dyer.
