“YETMINSTER, a parish in the hundred of the same name, county Dorset, 5½ miles S.W. of Sherborne. It is a station on the Yeovil and Weymouth branch of the Great Western railway. The parish, which lies on the western border of the county, and gives name to the hundred, comprises the chapelries of Chitnole and Leigh, with the hamlets of Winterhays, Holbrook, and Totnell. The village, situated near the river Ivel, a branch of the Yeo, consists of one long street, having still the appearance of a town. In 1300 the Bishop of Sarum obtained a grant from Edward I. for a market and fair, which was confirmed by Richard II.; but the market has long been discontinued. There are quarries of hard freestone in the parish. The impropriate tithes belong to the prebendary of Yetminster, in the cathedral of Salisbury. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Salisbury, value With the curacies of Chitnole and Leigh annexed, £160, in the patronage of the bishop. The church is dedicated to St. Andrew. There are besides chapels-of-ease at Chitnole and Leigh-the former dedicated to St. Peter. The Hon. R. Boyle, in 1699, bequeathed an estate now producing about £90, with house and orchard, for teaching 26 boys. There are also National schools at Yetminster and Chitnole. Fairs were held on the 23rd April and 1st October. G. D. W. Digby, Esq., is lord of the manor."

"LEIGH, a chapelry in the parish and hundred of Yetminster, Sherborne division of county Dorset, 62 1 miles S.W. of Sherborne, its post town. The inhabitants are wholly employed in agriculture. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Sarum, value £61, in the patronage of the bishop. The church is dedicated to St. Peter. The charities produce about £22 per annum."
