“WOODSFORD, a parish in the hundred of Winfrith, county Dorset, 5 miles E. of Dorchester, and 1 mile from Moreton railway station. The village is situated on the S. bank of the river Frome. The land is the property of the Earl of Ilchester, who takes his title of Baron Strangways from the castle of Woodsford-Strangways, part of Guido de Brient's castle, now converted into a farmhouse. This curious example of ancient domestic architecture has been in part restored by the Earl of Ilchester. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Salisbury, value £200. The church was a chancel, rebuilt by the present rector, who has also built a new rectory house."
