“WITCHAMPTON, a parish in the hundred of Cranborne, county Dorset, 8 miles E. of Blandford, 6 miles S.W. of Cranborne, and 5 N.W. of Wimborne. It is situated a little to the W. of the road from Wimborne to Cranborne, by the rapid stream Allen, a branch of the Stour, which turns a paper mill. The parish includes the hamlet of West Hemsworth, and has remains of an old abbey cell. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Salisbury, value £258. The church, dedicated to All Saints, was repaired some years since by H. C. Start, Esq., of Critchell House, at an expense of upwards of £5,000. The register dates from 1682. The Wesleyans have a chapel. There is an infant school, and 4 almshouses built in 1831 for aged persons."
