“SWYRE, a parish in the hundred of Uggscombe, Dorchester division of county Dorset, 5½ miles S.E. of Bridport, its post town. The village is situated about a mile from the coast of the English Channel. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Sarum, value £140. The church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The register dates from 1754. The parochial charities produce about £4 per annum. A National school was erected in 1851, at the expense of the Duke of Bedford, who is lord of the manor."
