“SHIPTON GORGE, a parochial chapelry in the hundred of Godderthorne, Bridport division of county Dorset, 3 miles E. of Bridport, its post town. The village, which is of small extent, is chiefly agricultural. The parish contains Broad Sturthill. There are some remains of the ancient manor house. The living is a curacy annexed to the rectory of Burton-Bradstock, in the diocese of Sarum. The church, dedicated to St. Martin, is an ancient edifice with a low embattled tower. The Earl of Ilchester is lord of the manor."
