“LONGBURTON, a parish in the hundred of Sherborne, county Dorset, 2 miles S.E. of Sherborne, its post town, and 14 N. of Dorchester. The village is situated on the main road from Bath to Weymouth. Many of the women are employed in making gloves for the Yeovil manufacturers. There are extensive quarries of limestone for building. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Salisbury, value with the perpetual curacy of Holnest annexed, £275. The church is dedicated to St. James. It contains some monuments of the Fitz James's family. The charities produce about £1 per annum. The Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists have chapels. There is a National school. J. S. W. S. E. Drax, Esq. is lord of the manor.
