“HINTON-MARTELL, a parish in the hundred of Badbury, county Dorset, 4 miles N.W. of Wimborne, its post town, and 6 S.W. of Cranborne. The village is small, and wholly agricultural. The land is chiefly arable, and the uplands embellished with wood, the prevailing timber being oak and ash. The soil is a strong clay alternated with chalk, which forms the substratum. The tithes have been commuted for a rent-charge of £360. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Sarum, value £331. The church is an ancient edifice, dedicated to St. John. There is a National school for both sexes. The Earl of Shaftesbury is lord of the manor."
