“HILTON, a parish in the hundred of Whiteway, county Dorset, 7½ miles S.W. of Blandford, its post town. It is a small agricultural parish, situated under Bulbarrow Camp, and contains the hamlets of Aller, Anstey, and Hartsfoot Lane. Bog iron and bituminous schist, or slate coal, are found in abundance. There are numerous mineral springs in the neighbourhood. Roman and early English coins have been found, also geological remains, consisting of oyster shells nine inches in diameter, large scallop and mussel shells, cornua amononis, mineralised wood, and a quantity of pyrites. The soil is heavy, producing excellent wheat, and is in some parts chalk alternated with gravel. There is a considerable extent of orchard and garden ground, and some waste specimens of iron ore, dug at Belchalwel, have been found to contain four grains of gold in the pound weight. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Sarum, value £273, in the patronage of the bishop. The church, dedicated to All Saints, has a square embattled tower. There is a parochial school for both sexes."
